Rico's Roundup
How a Little-Known Startup Shook the AI World and U.S. Markets
Hey folks, it’s Rico! Let’s talk about DeepSeek, the Chinese startup that has turned the AI world—and U.S. markets—on its head. This week, DeepSeek’s revolutionary AI model, R1, sent shockwaves across industries and rattled tech investors. Here’s how this small, under-the-radar company made an outsized impact.
The Disruption:
DeepSeek’s R1 model, developed with significantly fewer resources than its U.S. counterparts, has proven capable of rivaling giants like OpenAI and Google. Using just over 2,000 GPUs and a reported $5.6 million budget, DeepSeek achieved results comparable to companies spending upwards of $100 million. Their efficiency-first approach, relying on algorithmic innovations rather than brute-force computation, is a wake-up call for an industry accustomed to scaling through massive investments.
Market Impact:
U.S. tech stocks took a nosedive after DeepSeek’s emergence, with NVIDIA losing nearly 17% of its market value in a single day, wiping out approximately $600 billion. Investors panicked, questioning whether U.S. dominance in AI technology could sustain itself against such cost-efficient competition. However, stocks began stabilizing as analysts reassessed the long-term implications.
A Global "Sputnik Moment"?
DeepSeek’s success has drawn comparisons to the 1957 launch of Sputnik, which upended perceptions of global technological leadership. Some see this as a similar "Sputnik moment" for AI, exposing vulnerabilities in the U.S. strategy of scaling via high-cost infrastructure and massive chip inventories.
Key Insights:
Innovation Through Constraints:
DeepSeek’s limited access to cutting-edge GPUs—due to U.S. export controls—forced them to innovate. Their model optimizes computational efficiency, allowing fewer resources to do more.Algorithm Over Hardware:
Unlike traditional methods, which rely on hardware scaling, DeepSeek’s "mixture-of-experts" system activates only specific parts of the model as needed, slashing energy and computing costs.Disruptive Economics:
With AI development costs dropping dramatically, the playing field could level, enabling smaller players to compete with tech behemoths. This poses new challenges for U.S. companies relying on high-budget operations.
What It Means for the U.S.:
DeepSeek’s rise highlights both the resilience of Chinese innovation and the need for the U.S. to rethink its approach to AI development. While export controls limit China’s access to advanced chips, companies like DeepSeek demonstrate that software ingenuity can often bypass hardware constraints. For now, the U.S. retains an edge in chip access, but if competitors can innovate without relying on expensive infrastructure, that lead could shrink quickly.
Rico’s Takeaway:
DeepSeek isn’t just a disruptor—it’s a swift reminder that innovation doesn’t always require massive resources. In this rapidly evolving space, industry leaders and policymakers must emphasize adaptability, collaboration, and efficiency to stay ahead. The AI race isn’t just about who has the most chips—it’s about who uses them most wisely.

A Practical Roadmap for Implementing AI in Business
Hey everyone! Today, I want to break down a realistic roadmap for successfully implementing AI in business. AI is more than just a buzzword—it’s a powerful tool that can optimize processes, improve efficiency, and drive growth. However, many businesses struggle with where to start. That’s why having a structured approach is crucial.
If you're looking to integrate AI into your business, follow these key steps to ensure success:
Set Clear Success Metrics
Before diving into AI adoption, define measurable goals that align with business objectives. AI isn’t just about using the latest tech—it should directly impact business performance.
📌 Examples of success metrics:
Increase revenue by 10%.
Save 20 hours per week through automation.
Reduce operational costs by 15%.
By setting clear expectations upfront, you can track progress and measure ROI effectively.
Pick ONE Business Problem
One of the biggest mistakes businesses make when implementing AI is trying to do too much at once. Instead, focus on solving a single, critical business problem that aligns with strategic goals.
📌 Example: Reducing customer churn by using AI-driven predictive analytics or improving operational efficiency through automated workflows.
Starting with one focused initiative increases the likelihood of success and prevents unnecessary complications.
Organize Data for the Test
AI is only as good as the data it learns from. Ensure you have clean, accessible, and relevant data to train and test AI models effectively.
📌 Example: Build a simple data pipeline for processing and analysis, ensuring the data is structured, accurate, and updated.
A well-organized data strategy eliminates inefficiencies and improves AI’s performance in generating actionable insights.
Test Small Before Scaling
Rather than making a company-wide overhaul, start with a pilot project to minimize risk and refine the approach.
📌 Example: Automate a single customer service task or use AI to analyze sales trends for one department before rolling it out across the organization.
A small-scale test allows for quick learning and adjustments before making a larger investment.
Measure Results & Collect Feedback
AI implementation should be a continuous process of improvement. Measure success using both quantitative metrics (e.g., cost savings, efficiency gains) and qualitative feedback (e.g., customer and employee satisfaction).
📌 Example: If AI is being used for customer interactions, track response times, accuracy, and customer sentiment.
Regular feedback loops ensure AI solutions are meeting expectations and delivering value.
Scale What Works
Once the pilot project proves successful, expand AI adoption to other departments or similar processes.
📌 Example: If automating one task reduces costs and improves efficiency, scale the same automation across other departments to maximize impact.
AI is an ongoing journey, and scaling should be done strategically to avoid unnecessary complexity.
Let’s conclude with this... AI implementation doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By following this structured roadmap, businesses can integrate AI efficiently, minimize risks, and drive tangible results.
What do you think? Are you considering AI for your business? Let’s discuss in the comments—I’d love to hear about your experiences!

NADA 2025 Recap
The automotive industry is evolving fast, and nowhere was that more apparent than at NADA 2025. As the co-host of Artificial Antics and CTO at DealerPhones, I had the opportunity to experience firsthand the major shifts in AI, dealer technology, and industry expectations. Here are my top takeaways from this year’s event:
🚀 The AI Boom is Here
One of the biggest surprises at NADA 2025 was the sheer number of new and emerging AI vendors. You couldn’t go more than ten feet without running into a booth showcasing an AI-driven solution. While some of these companies have been around for a few years, many were brand new, reflecting the industry’s increasing focus on AI. Generative AI, automation, and machine learning solutions dominated conversations, showing that AI is no longer just a buzzword—it’s becoming a necessity.
📉 Dealers Want Less Complexity, More Simplicity
Despite all the AI innovation, one theme came through loud and clear: dealers don’t want more dashboards—they want better workflows. The overwhelming preference was for AI solutions that integrate seamlessly into their existing CRM and DMS systems. Dealers already have plenty of data; what they really want is actionable insights pushed to where they already work. This shift toward simplicity means AI adoption will depend on how easy it is to implement without disrupting workflows.
📲 DealerPhones’ AI Solutions: Big Wins
At DealerPhones, we received fantastic feedback on both our foundational platform and our newer AI-driven solutions. Some key highlights:
EngageCX: Our multi-channel system allows dealers to engage customers across voice, text, web chat, WhatsApp, Facebook, and more. The response? Dealers loved the flexibility and ease of use.
DealerGenie: Our soon-to-launch AI software that delivers three simple, actionable insights each morning—ensuring every department focuses on what’s working today. The goal is clear: cut through the noise and drive success without unnecessary complexity. If you want to dig deeper, the product has a full featured set of Conversational Intelligence that goes well beyond the sentiment, summary and transcription that most "AI" companies are offering.
One dealer principal shared a cautionary AI tale: After implementing a different AI solution, their sales manager was suddenly required to make 54 follow-up calls in a single day—completely overwhelming the team. They canceled the tool immediately. This reinforced a key lesson: AI must assist, not overburden. Simplicity is key.
🎤 Industry-Wide Trends & Dealer Sentiment
Growing Interest in AI Education: This year saw an increase in AI-focused sessions and learning tracks. Dealers are eager to understand how AI can drive efficiency without creating unnecessary friction.
Attendance Was Lower, But Engagement Was High: Despite attendance being around 70% of previous years, conversations were deep, engaging, and focused.
Reputation & Lead Management Still a Priority: More vendors are emerging to tackle pipeline management, lead nurturing, and reputation control, proving that foundational dealership concerns remain top of mind.
🔮 Looking Ahead: The Future of AI in Dealerships
The message from NADA 2025 was clear: AI is here to stay, but its success in automotive will be measured by how seamlessly it fits into daily workflows. Dealers want AI-driven efficiency without disrupting relationships or adding complexity.
