Skeptics Corner: AI in Love: Navigating the Future of Dating and Personal Relationships

Back in Episode 4, when we were chatting about Tinder’s AI-driven photo selection, I voiced a concern that seemed a bit "out there" at the time—I suggested that AI might eventually make dating decisions on our behalf. It felt a bit like a leap, but looking at how these technologies are creeping into personal spaces, it seemed like a path we might be headed down.

And you know what? It’s starting to look like that prediction wasn’t too far off. Whitney Wolfe Herd from Bumble just made a comment that AI could potentially "date for you." That’s straight out of an episode of "Black Mirror," isn't it? When you hear stuff like that, you have to wonder where we’re drawing the line. It’s one thing to use AI to help you pick a good photo, but it's another entirely to have AI take over the process of forming genuine human connections, or is it too far? We know that the modern dating scene, relationships, etc. have sort of gone to pot. Traditional relationships and longevity have been on a serious decline for years, so what if AI actually does a better job at pairing the right people together? What would that look like for society, marriage success rates, and overall mental health? What implications would that have on the economies of the world if people were able to pair up with their true mate and live a better life with better decisions?

This kind of development is exactly why I stress the importance of staying critical and vigilant about the role AI is playing in our lives. Sure, technology can make things more convenient, but at what cost? Are we just going to outsource our social skills and personal judgments to algorithms? That’s the big question we need to keep asking and I would love to get some feedback from you all. Do you think that these sorts of applications of AI are in bounds for where we should be heading as a society, world, etc.? If this type of tech makes a safer dating space, assists the lonely with finding their forever mate, and improves dating and relationships overall, is it really a bad thing? I guess this week, I have far more questions than I have answers, but am curious to see where these applications of algorithms take us.
